A visionary ahead of his times, bestowed with India’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna – “Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy” Tata was truly a multi faceted personality. An avid aviator, he became the first person to obtain the first ever issued pilot license in India. It was his passion for flying that gave birth to India’s first commercial airline, Tata Airlines which later became Air India.

Early Life & Education :


JRD Tata was born on 29th July 1904 in Paris to Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata, Who was the notable businessman, his father was Parsi. His mother was Suzzane, Who Was French.
JRD’s full name was Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata and he was popularly known as Jeh to his friends. He has a older sister named Sylla, a younger sister Rodabeh and two younger brothers Darab and Jimmy Tata. JRD Tata was the second of four children. In 1930 JRD married Thelma Vicaji.
He spent his childhood in France and attended the Janson De Sailly School in Paris. He also attended the Cathedral and John Connon School, in Mumbai. When his father joined the Tata company he moved the whole family to London.
When his family relocated to India after his mother’s premature death. He also went to the French Foreign Legion, a unique military unit in the French Army. In 1923, he Was Sent to the England Where he Attend the Grammer School. Although he wished to attend the Cambridge School to study Engineering, he couldn’t; since French boys had to enlist for the Army for minimum of 12 months.
Early Career :

JRD wanted to extend his service in the forces but destiny had something else in store for him. By leaving the French army JRD’s life was saved because shortly thereafter, the regiment in which he served was totally wiped out during an expedition in Morocco.
His Father Called Him Back To India & Told Him to Join the Tata Group. on his father’s wish, JRD Tata started working as an unpaid apprentice in the Indian company Tata & Sons. he joined the Company as an unpaid intern in 1925.
He has great interest in flying. In 1929, JRD became the first Indian to pass the pilot’s examination. With this distinctive honour of being India’s first pilot, he was instrumental in giving wings to India by building Tata Airlines, which ultimately became Air India. He was Very Much heavily inspired by Louis Bleriot, a famous French aviator. His passion for flying was fulfilled with the formation of the Tata Aviation Service in 1932.

In 1938, at the age of 34, JRD was elected Chairman of Tata & Sons making him the head of the largest industrial group in India. He took over the post from his second cousin Nowroji Saklatwala. He drove the Tata Group of companies into excellence in various fields such as Steel, engineering, electricity, power and hospitality.

JRD was the trustee of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust from its inception in 1932 for over half a century. Under his direction, this Trust established Asia’s first cancer hospital, the Tata Memorial Centre for Cancer, Research and Treatment, in Bombay in 1941. He also founded the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, 1936 (TISS), the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, 1945 (TIFR), and the National Centre for Performing Arts.
Career Growth of TATA Group :

Tata Motors has Been Founded In 1945. The Founded Aviation of Tata Group Was In 1932, Which Became Air India In 1946, Which was Also Came On The International Floor at 1948. In 1948, Air India went global as Air India International under JRD Tata’s leadership. In 1953, he was appointed the Chairman of the board for Air India and inducted into the board of Indian Airlines.
1956, JRD Tata initiated a program of closer “employee association with management” to give workers a stronger voice in the affairs of the company. Free medical aid, workers’ provident scheme, and workmen’s accident compensation schemes Are very Generously Implemented For the Workers.
In 1968, he founded Tata Consultancy Services as Tata Computer Centre. He started with 14 enterprises under his leadership – Tata Motors, TCS, Tata Telecommunications, Tata Tea,Titan Industries, Voltas, which till date, are India’s one of the best business entities. From information technology to automotive, from electronic appliances to house hold items, JRD Tata expanded Tata groups in various spheres.
In 1979, Tata Initiated the First Time Ever Worker Insurance Policy, In Which By The Time Of Worker Left his House for the Job, he Should be Counted As Work Hours. Tata Steel Township was also selected as a UN Global Compact City because of the quality of life, conditions of sanitation, roads and welfare that were offered by Tata Steel.
More than being just a successful business, the group played a very active role in making the Indian society better. He launched host of initiatives in the employee welfare, education and healthcare.
JRD Tata passed away on 29 November 1993 at the age of 89 of a kidney infection in Geneva, Switzerland.
