Mark Zuckerberg was born on May 14, 1984 in White Plains, New York, and was raised in nearby Dobbs Ferry. He is the son of Karen, a psychiatrist, and Edward Zuckerberg, a dentist. In 2002, after graduating Phillips Exeter, Zuckerberg entered Harvard University. Mark Zuckerberg became known quickly as the go-to computer programmer on campus. By his sophomore year, he had already built two programs: CourseMatch and FaceMash. Both programs became wildly popular, but the university shut down the latter program after it was deemed to be inappropriate.


He created a website called Facemash during his sophomore year, an instantly controversial website that encouraged students to rate each other based on appearance. The site was an immediate source of controversy at the university for several reasons. The first was its illegal use of photographs, which the university and students took issue with. The second was its controversial nature not every student like being ranked based on their appearance. The third was its massive resource use while it was hosted on Harvard servers, it was the most popular page in the university’s entire network. When the number of visitors exceeded the limit, the server crashed due to overload. Mark appeared before the committee on computer hacking. After his sophomore year, Zuckerberg dropped out of college to pursue what was then called Facebook full-time.
